The discussion of content alone in this piece could fill a book. Of obvious note is the works strident representation of the compression of contrasting identities and cultures, and the psychic toll of holding them together. But perhaps the most illustrative aspect of this work is its media; laminated board, paint on top of paint and gravel. This layering is consistent with the works content and points to the inextricably fused identities and cultures that make up the Chicano experience. The natural materials may also be homage to the early practitioners of Chicano art, who often plied their trade on rough walls in graveled East LA alleys. 16″x16.5 Acrylic and gravel on laminate board.
